FOREST CITY SUMMIT NEWS ARTICLE

NORTH IOWA K9 (where the dog will be purchased from)

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that we are currently raising money for the addition of a K9 Unit.  Due to budget restraints we have decided to raise the money through donations, fund raising, and grants.

The cost for the dog and dog and handler training $12,000.00.  We are hoping to raise $16,000.00 to help with the extra costs for the dog such as collars, feed/water bowls, training tools, the insert for the car to keep the dog in, and the door opener so the dog can be deployed by the a button on the deputies belt.

The initial investment may seem steep but when you look at the benefits we will see in the county and local communities it is a small price to pay.  The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit has had nearly $300,000.00 in forfeitures and seizures in the 6.5 years it has been in service. That averages out to be more than $46,000 a year. The K9 (formerly the Forest City Police Department K9) was involved in nearly 50 cases in the first month.

The dog will be utilized in many different aspects such as:

  • Obedience- On and off leash the dog will sit, come, stay, and heel. Other advanced obedience commands are taught as well such as hand signals for come, down, sit, and a walking sit, walking down, and walking stand.
  • Article Recovery- If a fleeing person drops an article such as narcotics, gun, or knife the K9 will locate the item so it can be recovered for evidence and keep off the streets.
  • Suspect Building Search- Dogs can efficiently track a suspect hiding from law enforcement or a missing/lost person and dogs will search a building for hidden suspects. It is impractical for law enforcement officers to efficiently search a large building for suspects. A  K9 will find the suspect in hiding reducing manpower time and injury to officers from the suspect(s).
  • Handler Protection - Dogs will react to a violent suspect(s) who assaults the handler or refuses to obey the handlers command(s) (i.e. show me your hands, get on the ground.). A trained dog may prevent a handler assault by the mere presence of the dog in the K9 Patrol Vehicle.
  • Suspect Apprehension- A trained dog will stop a fleeing suspect by apprehending him/her.
  • Narcotic Detection on 10 odors- The 10 odors of detection are Marijuana, Hashish, Cocaine, Crack Cocaine, Heroin, Black Tar Heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, Methamphetamine, and Methamphetamine ICE.
  • Public and school demonstrations.

The Sheriff’s Office would use the K9 in a proactive professional manner to help in the fight against drugs in Winnebago County and the local communities.  Please help us keep the citizens and businesses of Forest
City, Lake Mills, Buffalo Center, Thompson, Rake, Leland, Scarville, and Winnebago County safe.
